ATV Usage in District 13
As a rural district, I receive a lot of calls and emails regarding unsafe ATV usage in our communities. As a well loved form of sport and recreation, it's important that we work on establishing safe and community-minded ATV usage, where everyone can feel respected.
A message from law enforcement regularly is that policing happens by community consent, and their proactive enforcement is driven by data informed by calls. RCMP cannot be everywhere all at once, and it is the responsibility of communities to report dangerous behavior as we see it. By doing so, the RCMP have a sense of communities with unsafe ATV usage, and can better work on those areas. The non-emergency police number (902) 490-5020.
In the case of ATVs specifically, the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables does have a team to investigate OHV safety. Their complaint number is 1-800-565-2224 and is 24/7. They encourage folks to call at the time with description direction of travel.
In both cases, be as detailed as possible. Time, direction, type of ATV and driver description are all important.
